Michael W. King became interested in the story of these diplomats after seeing a photo exhibit about their lives. He worked with noted British historian Sir Martin Gilbert, who had just completed a book about common people who saved Jews during the Holocaust and with Stephanie Nyombayire, a Rwandan anti-genocide who lost 100 members of her family to genocide. His research led King to descendants of the diplomats and to survivors of the ordeal as he uncovered stories largely unknown before this time.
Michael W. King is an Emmy-winning filmmaker and producer. His topics over the last 17 years have included the Holocaust, Martin Luther King Jr., the African American experience, teenage sexuality, youth violence and education in poor communities.
“In film, we have a cinematic language that includes storytelling, cinematography, editing and music,” he said. “My degree has allowed me to explore these areas with confidence and competence.”
Michael W. King was nominated in 2008 for an A&E Indie Film Spotlight Award for his film “Rapping with Shakespeare.” He was also the recipient of an International Television and Video Association Award and Visa for Life medal.

The Rescuers, by acclaimed director and producer Michael W. King, Filmmaker features Holocaust historian Sir Martin Gilbert and anti-genocide activist Stephanie Nyombayire, as they give a voice to the international diplomats who saved thousands of Jews during the Second World War. The events will offer students and teachers the opportunity to reflect on this year’s HMD theme: Power of Words.
